Top 5 Tips for Autumn Cycling

Scorching summer heat can leave cyclists drained and dreaming of Autumn’s cooler, more forgiving outings. With milder temperatures, clear skies, and less chance of thunderstorms, March to May is one of the best times to ride in Australia.

At Cinettica, we love Autumn for its perfect balance. Riders can still wear lighter Summer kit - think short-sleeved jerseys and above-the-knee bibs - without the hassle of shoe covers, bulky jackets, or skull caps.

Ah, March, April and May ... the months when refreshingly cooler mornings typically give way to perfect riding conditions. So, as we roll into Autumn, here are our Top 5 tips to help you make the most of the season ahead.

1. Set Goals for the Season
Autumn is the ideal time to build a solid training base for the rest of the year. Use the longer days and lingering warmth to your advantage. Whether you’re gearing up for a Gran Fondo or a dream cycling holiday in Europe, keep those kilometres ticking over while the sun's still shining, roads are dry and the weather is relatively warm. Set a weekly distance goal and stick to it. 100, 125, 150km ... whatever your target, log it on Strava, stick a note on the fridge door or add a reminder on your phone.

2. Stay Hydrated
Cooler days can fool you into drinking less, but hydration is essential all year round, including through Autumn & Winter! Stick to your electrolyte plan and carry two bidons. Talking bidons, consider popping one in the freezer the night before a longer ride. A tough climb on a 25-degree day can still leave you dehydrated and cooler water is so refreshing. Also, it’s wise to regularly take small sips and get into the habit of drinking before you’re thirsty.

3. Prepare for Cool Mornings
Autumn’s variable weather calls for smart layering. Arm warmers, a windproof vest, and front and rear lights or a rear light/radar combo are smart choices during those early morning starts and late afternoons. Being prepared ensures your rides are more enjoyable and, ultimately, more rewarding.

4. Pack the Essentials
After a summer of bigger and more organised group rides, it’s easy to get lazy or lose track about carrying spares. For autumn’s longer, solo, or small-group adventures, make sure you check and properly pack your ride essentials. A smart setup includes a multitool, spare tube, mini pump, sunscreen, and lip balm. Packing a couple of muesli bars, gels, and hydration sachets or tablets helps as well. Being prepared can turn a potential ride-ender into a quick roadside fix.

5. Be Inspired by the Pros

It’s Spring Classics season! Races like Omloop, Strade Bianche, Milan-San Remo, and Paris- Roubaix are some of the most thrilling on the calendar. Watching the pros battle it out on the road, cobbles and gravel is a surefire way to get the pulse racing and send mojo levels skyhigh. Some of the most thrilling and enthralling bike races of the year, it’s impossible not to want to be out there emulating our heroes after watching televised coverage of the Spring Classics.
